tailpipe/kitty questions

A while back, I recall Brett stating that the appearance of the two
tailpipes of his '91 200q differed significantly. I believe this led to
discussion about a possible problem with one of the cat converters. Was
this ever resolved, Brett?

I now see that my car, also '91 200q, has one clean (left, grey) and one
pretty sooty (right, black) tailpipe. This may not be a recent occurance but
I've only noticed this during the past week or so. It also happens (a few
weeks previous) that my exhaust system began to make rattling
noises--causing me to wonder if a converter was breaking up. Everything
seems tight, externally --including the heatshield.

Will a CO test be a good indicator of catalyst breakup? What's available in
the way of aftermarket converters? Should these always be replaced in pairs?
