Re: 4ksq window switches

This seems to be a common problem. When I bought my 4000,
only the front windows worked, partly because the
rear window lockout switch was trashed inside. I wired
around it because I seldom have small children riding
in the back seat these days.

You can remove the front console switches by pulling the
connectors off through the ashtray opening, then pulling the
switches out from underneath. Take a couple of very small
screwdrivers and pry the sides of the switch housing apart
so the little teeth you can see on the side of the housing
disengage from the rectangular openings and lift the top
of the switch straight up. Once you have everything exposed,
use fine emery paper to clean the contacts. Put a drop of
WD40 or something to keep them from oxidizing quite as
quickly the next time. If you are careful, you may be
able to get the rear switches far enough out to work on
them without taking the door panel all the way off. They
have wiring harnesses coming out of them rather than
connector pins on the back. The switches can be pushed
out from the rear, unlike the front ones that are installed
by pushing them up from underneath.

If this doesn't fix the problem, you may have broken wires
inside the rubber boot that goes from the door jamb to the
door. My 1985 4ksq had this problem on a rear door. Took
me forever to isolate the break and about an hour to fix.
