As I expected.  I don't know who it was (but take a bow if you're here)
who suggested that the condition of the engine mounts has a significant
bearing on exhaust stud life.  For the MB engine, Audi replaced the
solid rubber mounting under that side of the engine with a hydraulic
one.  Also, the condition of the plate shielding that mount from
exhaust heat is significant.  I've now started to replace both when I
do serious work down there.

Ah, but were they new _AUDI_ studs or some cheap aftermarket
'equivalent'?
