Re: Coolant
Bob,
Distilled water _is_ demineralized water. The techniques for the process
differ but the results are the same.
Distilled (or demineralized, if you prefer) water would probably be an
improvement over simple tap water. It will, however, not provide any
corrosion resistance/prevention or freeze protection or higher operating
temperatures without boil-over or any of the other advantages of antifreeze
mixed with the water. What should be used? IMO, a good grade of phosphate
free antifreeze mixed with distilled (or demineralized again, if you
prefer) water according to the specifications provided on the antifreeze
container.
Use of ethylene glycol antifreeze vs. propylene glycol antifreeze is up to
you. Due to the lower molecular weight of ethylene glycol it will be
somewhat more effective in lowering coolant freezing points that the same
volume of propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is less toxic to pets than
ethylene glycol. They are attractive to animals due to their sweet taste
caused by their structural similarity to a group of chemicals collectively
referred to as sugars.
