RE: Wasted BW
... I truly wonder how many people pay per byte these days ... the closest
charge to "per byte" would be those who download over phone lines via modem,
but I'll bet that if you looked at how most of these folks operate (myself
included) there is far more time with the line sitting effectively idle
while the user is reading or composing messages. Perhaps my assumptions are
incorrect and that there is a high percentage of people who are watching
every second of connect time ... uploading and downloading e-mail for
processing off line, but even for them I would bet that the price they pay
for the sigs is pretty nominal. I am thinking that the reason you may
notice the sigs is that you are on the digest ... because I must say that I
have yet to notice much of a problem with lengthy sigs. I understand that
there are programs that can process digests almost as though they were
individual messages ... that might make this less of a problem ... or you
can do what others have done and unsub the list entirely and view the
traffic via the e-mail archives. I know that for me in most cases with
being on the list I never look down far enough into the message to even see
the sig ... and people who quote an entire message, adding their line or two
of comment at the end is the more serious offense ... :-) Frankly, I found
it amusing that after complaining about the WOB that is caused by some folks
sigs that you promote the beginning of a new thread that would be a complete
WOB! Perhaps rather than post the whole list what you could do is to make a
respectful request directly to the people you would accuse of being sig
bandits rather than posting your request to everyone! How is anyone to
evaluate their sigs to meet your requirements? I certainly hope that you
would not accuse me of lengthy sigs ... :-)
