ECU Chip upgrade.... Are they reliable?

Is it advisable to replace the ECU ("chip") in my Audi A4 1.8T?  I've
seen many aftermarket products that provide ECU upgrade for my car.
They claim by upgrading the ECU and the air filter will give my car +48
hp, that come to 198hp.  This sounds really good but what about the
warranty?  Will this upgrade void the warranty?
