Part Numbers
Can anyone comment on the Audi practice and philosophy of
replacing and superceding part numbers (p/n)?
Several of us who attended Chris Miller's timing belt-a-thon
ordered front crankcase oil seals from Rod at The Parts Connection. We all
received p/n 034-115-147A which fit just fine. I just went to Clair Audi
and ordered that p/n. They gave me p/n 054-115-147B stating that this p/n
had replaced the other. They are very close in appearance. The "B"
part has its p/n stamped on it along with other writing. The "A" p/n has
no writing on it.
Audi seems to change and supercede p/ns a lot. I would
like to think that they are improving them, but I am not so naive. In
standard p/n nomenclature practice, the letter suffix means a later revision
level. I thought the first 3 numbers of the p/n indicated the type of
car. 044 = type 44 cars (5K, 100, 200). How do you know you are
getting the right part?
