TBP - seat repair chat

The timing belt party photo "seat repair chat" reminds me to provide a
gratuitous comment to the list about the "hog rings" used to retain the seat
covers to the foam cushions. I found out that hog rings are called that
because they are implanted in hogs' snouts to inhibit them from rooting in
the ground. (This is serious body piercing folks, these rings are about 3
mm in wire size.) Hog rings (sold for that purpose) are too big for our
use. Shoat rings are closer in size, but (contrary to what I said at the TB
party) on closer examination they are also slightly larger than the rings
used in Audi's seats. I vaguely recall Phil Payne listing an actual Audi
part number for them, but I don't have a copy of that message handy. I saw
what looked like one on my 90 fiche, illustrated below the rear seat
cushion, labeled "retainer" I think, but it wasn't clear enough to be sure.
I personally suspect that wire ties (e.g., Ty-wraps) would outlive the
remaining lifetime of most cars requiring seat disassembly.
