Re: Stock stereo options... LONG LONG

Good for you, you got a great car. Although the stereo system needs
improvement. I own an '88 80 and I have upgraded considerably, but
nothing to extreme. The first thing to do is get those speakers out of
there. This is the money conscious approach I'm gonna give. Replace
all four speakers with some nice coaxial aftermarket speakers, 4" + 6
1/2" may I suggest Eclipse ($175.00). Then take out those old ones.
Front - Pull grilles off, undo one screw and pull up. Rears - Go into
the trunk and undo those clips on the amps, then twist the speaker out
and down, pull off the grille from inside the car. Installing new
ones. Front - With most 4" speakers you may have to break off one or
more of the mounting tabs to get the speaker to fit, then hook 'em up,
place 'em in the hole, finally screw 'em down, and place the grille on.
Rears - A little bit of a pain - Get 6 1/2" speakers and mount them on
the particle board instead of the metal. Requires you to remove the
rear deck and have a good steady hand with a drill. Once you have those
guy in place the rear deck back in. Take those amps off the old
speakers by unscrewing the screw on the bottom. As high as possible,
cut the lines going to speakers. Run lines off the new speakers and
splice them onto those lines you just cut. Bingo your done. Find a
place to stick those amps as not to pull on those spliced lines. Now
you have a stock radio and new speakers. I did that for a good four
months, sounds great, good reception.
When you decide to put a new head unit in, pull out the old radio
with tongs. Disconnect the clips and anttena leads. Make sure they
don't fall back in to far. There should be a map of which leads do what
on the top of the radio. Simple picture map. Using the new wiring clip
and the wiring map they gave you cut and splice accordingly. Expect a
couple goof ups and fix accordingly. Now you must replace those rear
speaker lines. A bit of a project, but with a little ingenuity it
becomes easy. Pull up the seat, remove the screws, and pull the trim
up. The trim runs the full length of the car. Take off the kick panel
and the two knee panels with the ratchets. Bingo. Place new lines
where the old ones are and put everything back together. Get rid of
those amps and wire those speakers up.
AND as an added trick, I did this custom like and all. If you have
that cutout on the drivers side knee panel you can install any 6 CD
Changer in there. I did and it's great! Easy access and no trunk
junk. Make sure when you get that head unit that it has a control for a
CD Changer. If you want instructions for the CD Changer email me. Hope
I helped.
