I saw this last month on an MB. I've now gone over to performing
classic static alignment twice - once using the flywheel, cam gear and
distributor marks, and once using the actual Hall sender output to
align the distributor. On the car in question, the Hall sender was
about 2 degrees out. I was amazing, when rotating the engine by hand,
to find just how sharply defined the 'window' is.
I didn't like Audi's way of connecting diagnostic equipment to the
distributor, so I went over to Gary's scrapyard (VAGServe) and got a
three-pin connector off an old 200TQ and a broken distributor. Hey
presto - a new test lead now drives round with me.
