ETKA calls it a 'valve housing', which is one of a list of things it
isn't - since it has no valves anywhere near it.

However - it is indeed very prone to insidious failure, usually cracking
underneath the rear port where the breather that goes around to the air
mass sensor attaches.

In my experience, the only way to check this little piece of rubber
properly is to remove it from the car.  Just feeling around and
underneath it is not sufficient.  There's also the small section
of hose that attaches directly to the crankcase.
