RE: Dual vs single filtration
Interesting to note that the addition of the dual filter was dropped a year
after the addition of the water jacketed k26 (85 being the overkill year,
both the dual filters and the water jacket used). There is an SAE article
that addresses the addition of water cooling and it's effect on turbo heat,
the results are amazing. Bottom line, the "turbo" filter was to grab the
coked oil chunks that might be circulating in the oil. The coking comes from
hot shut down, not from a running (even red hot) turbo. The water jacket
(and afterun) all but eliminated the coking issue.
A concerted effort to cool your turbo after a hot run on a non WC turbo
eliminates the real need to have a dual filter setup. The S2 rallye car I
crew for has a single filter setup, straight prepped spec from SMS/Audi
Sport. Obviously, even competition doesn't change the need. Run good oil,
change it, and use the ck valve oil filter. The dual filter setup looks cool
though.
