Oil Strainer, otherwise known as a filter.

Most transmission filters are nothing like "oil" filters, they usually consist
of a housing with one or two layers of screen material inside (just what the
"screen" is made of depends on the manufacturer), the main goal of a
transmission filter is to catch metal particles and clutch material. Remember,
there is no combustion going on inside the transmission (at least I hope you
don't) so therefore the transmission fluid tends to stay cleaner for a longer
period of time. I commend you attention to maintenence of you auto trans, most
people just drive a car for 60 to 80K miles and then wonder why their
transmission is starting to give them problems. While it's true that trans oil
isn't subjected to the same torture as engine oil, there will always be
particles suspended in any oil that lubricates moving metal parts, and regular
changing of said oil will help to remove some of those suspended particles and
prevent those particles from acting as sandpaper on the moving parts.

OK, time to get off the soap box.

Crap, that reminds me, I need to change my manual trans oil.
