poor manners...
I subscribed to the quattro mother-list yesterday for the first time,
and have been troubled by something that occurred as a result. Sorry for
the long post, but I feel that this is relevant to all list members.
I have been a subscriber and contributor to the 20-valve list for more
than a year, and am proud to report that it is a very civilized place to
be; newbies are welcomed, there are no stupid questions, and the members
pretty much behave according to the golden rule.
However, after posting my first message on the quattro list, offering my
CQ for sale, I started getting messages from someone who appears to have
learned his behavior from an illiterate goat.
I've appended the email conversation that came to me from a lister this
morning. I've cut out only his email address; if he chooses to identify
and embarrass himself, so be it, but my momma taught me to be polite.

(As received..)
>Asking $14,500, or will consider trades
Good Luck!
I've bought and sold "5" 1991 Coupe Quattro's in the past month
for $6000-7000 price range. 1 at $1800, needed engine.
People are not really that stupid! Especially Quattro owners......
Your going to have to come down on the price or your not going to sell
it.
I'll trade you an 83 Ur Quattro, I paid $4500 for. It too is in "great"
shape! Plus I have an 87 4KQ in excellent shape as well. I paid $3000
for it.

(My response...)
Thanks for sharing.
BTW, for $6-7K, I would expect to get a high-miles unmodified car in
somewhat raggy shape, which needs work.
This car is, in many respects, better than new, and needs nothing. It
has had $9K and a hell of a lot of work invested in improvements.
One gets what one pays for...
------------------------------------------------
(The jerk's comeback...)
Each Coupe I sold was in "immaculate" shape!
Several had springs, cams, wheel, stereo's, etc........
I DONT SELL JUNK! One even had a "New" 20V Turbo motor!
All those "toys" mean nothing to a Bank, where someone is trying to
finance a car. Who do you know can drop $14,500 "cash" on a 9 year
old car?
Your price of $14,500 is only $8000 above what any lending institution
would allow towards the purchase of a "used" car. Who has $8000
to sink onto a 9 year old car?
Your looking to get your money back from all those "mods", and it wont
happen.
Especially when the same make and model of Audi can be purchased
for less than half the price your asking!
I know of 3 1984 Ur-Quattro's below $13,000 which are "as new", and
people would much rather have than a 91 Coupe!
Your price is too high, and your not going to get it. You will have to
come down considerably in order to sell.
If the cars was involved in an accident, the insurance company would
only pay $6000 for it! Requardless of what has been done to it!
You can boast and bragg about the car all day and night, but someone
"sucker" would be real foolish to pay that price!
I'm sure I'm not the only person who has commented about your outrageous
price either!
Good Luck! You'll need it!
-------------------------------------------------------
(My answer...)
Thanks for venting your opinion.
Was there some reason for your rant or are you just such a nice guy that
you wanted to tell me about your experiences ?
--------------------------------------------------------
(He can't let it go...)
Yah!
Your outrageous price!
Makes me laugh.........
--------------------------------------------------------
(My final word, before adding him to my email auto-trash list...)
Go away.
I really don't give a damn about your opinions. Please stop wasting my
time and keep your thoughts to yourself.

Now my point here is simply that membership in a listserv group is much
like attending a party where people with similar interests meet to chat.
Like any good party, if someone starts acting too obnoxious, he will
eventually be ejected on his face, to the relief of other attendees, and
will be invited not to come back.
If clowns like this are common on the quattro list, I believe that it
would be appropriate to start applying a similar procedure, in the
interests of the other members. It should be obvious that if a newbie is
put down and goes away, he will probably not get interested in Audi
Quattros, learn more about them, and one day become the guy who buys
your car - good manners is simply good sense, and there is NO excuse for
bad manners.
I'd suggest that if someone on the quattro list exhibits behavior like
this more than once, it would be time to start trimming the list by
cutting off subscriptions.
