I would only add that the "bearing" bearings (red or sometimes yellow or
orange plastic racers ~12cm in DIA) should not be touched at all as they
never go bad IME.
I replaced them on two of my Audis, the '85 5000s and '89 200TQ only to
discover that the old ones never exhibited any play whatsoever.

Always did this and always took the car to an alignment shop afterwards.
The car was always off by a good margin.
I would advise to mark the position with a stencil beforehand to get a
crude reference point, yet to always realign the car afterwards.
