Yes, I removed the (rusted) center muffler on my '89 80 about 4 months
ago.

Don't know. Powerband still runs out at 5k RPMs.

On the highway, you won't notice the difference. But at lower speeds,
with the windows open, and more than half-throttle it will be very
raspy. Note that this is not the "good" racing quattro growl, but more
like a Honda with a hole in the muffler.

I am looking for a good, quiet, free-flowing replacement exhaust
system, but I've found it doesn't exist. I'm at the point where I'll
just have my mechanic weld one up.
