If you mean the point where the rim/tire combo comes closest to the strut 
housing, you're correct ... although I haven't actually tried it, I think 
with the optimal offset and a willingness to roll the outer fender lip on the 
front fenders, you can probably stuff a 9"x18" wheel under the fender and 
still clear everything.  With regard to 17s, I think an 8.5"x17" wheel is 
probably the limit and even that's going to be an awfully tight fit.  In the 
back, there's plenty of room for pretty much anything you might wish to fit...

Mind you, when you start choosing your offsets with the primary goal of 
fitting the largest possible rim/tire combo, you stand a good chance of 
screwing up the car's handling by inappropriately altering its suspension 
geometry.  BTDT, I'm afraid, but only when I was much younger and only then 
with BMWs...  ;^)
