replacing everything that wears will eliminate 75-90% of the clunk...
the rest will be "non-obvious" wear parts.  I completely eliminated my
"clunks", only to obsessively notice another faint one.  there is a
small amount of play between my half shafts.  Guess all I have to do is
swap the tranny...

it's an automatic.  bet you can stop them by hand, right?

thats' how I would do it.  cool so as not to overstress anything,
running so it will be afterwards!

I tend towards the gentlest cleaners I can though, used over and over
again things get clean.  Like Dawn dish soap, Simple Green seems good
too.  Elbow grease is best, easy to control and direct.

poor quality connections, secondary ignition problems, would be the best
places to look.  Take all the wiring connections under the hood apart
(one at a time!), clean them and use your choice of contact
enhancers/sealers (not silicon RTV!) to keep them clean and waterproof.
