Symptoms: with only very modest resistance the pedal goes to the floor,
with engine running pulsing occurs from half way on to the floor, with
engine not running there is no pulsing. No leaks, all fluid levels are
up,
hand brake works fine, no noticeable warning signs.
Analysis: The brake master cylinder has failed catastrophically.
Questions: Any other possible scenarios? Does this tell me anything
about
the condition of my hydraulic accumulator?

Yes. It screams "replace me" :-)
Does the red light come on under braking? The one which is for the
e-brake, _not_ in the autocheck display?
Does the brake pedal lose power assist upon the engine shutdown in less
than 30 pumps?
If yes - replace the bomb. The symptoms of a bad bomb mimic those of a
master cylinder with an internal seal leak. In '92 I spent $125 in vain,
when I replaced a perfectly good MC on my 5000s. Then I had to spend the
additional $400 on a new bomb, Yep, the bombs were very expensive in
those days.
