The point I was making was semantic in that the diff, by itself, can't shift 
anything ... you must factor traction available at both ends of the car into 
the equation, as you point out, before discussing any transfers of torque.  A 
locked center diff merely causes the front and rear driveshafts to rotate at 
the same speed and has no control over the distribution of the engine's 
torque.

Dave's wording suggested otherwise and struck me as "dismissive" in nature, 
hence the basis for my (perhaps overly) terse response ... clearly, this 
issue isn't one I'm interested in visiting again but Taurean that I am, I 
will often respond instinctively to a red flag when it's waved directly in my 
face, as appeared to be the case here.  Sorry...
