RE: Audi S1 rumours and news
wonderful news! that is almost worth the trip to germany just to see.
after originally denying it's existence, audi have certainly been more open
about it in the last few years. i guess that they were uncomfortable about
it due to the "production orientation" message (if not the reality) that
they were pushing to legitimise quattro to the public. i remember walter
rohrl saying that it was remarkably well sorted when he drove it.
interestingly enough fwiw, the quattro drivetrain would have needed very few
modifications to go mid-engined (transverse). however, as peugeot found,
mid-engined transverse did make for rather interesting handling
characteristics with the torque reaction of the engine mounted about the c
of g, when the car was airborne. it almost killed ari vataneen.
hans-juergen how would you like to be the official list photographer? :-)

Subject: Audi S1 rumours and news
The Audi S1 driven by Walter Roehrl / Phil Short at the RAC and
crashed at that event, has been restored and is now privately owned
in Germany. Saw the car today with German registration plates at a
local rallye cross event performing some show runs.
There are also rumors that Walter Roehrl sold his PDK Audi S1 to a
collector near Wolfsburg Germany and also some people in Ingolstadt
have heard that Audi will exhibit the mid engine rally prototype once
their new museum is ready.
