Re: Cross drill = crack rotors?

Jason,

>From what I remember, if the rotors were cast with the little vent holes
in them, from the correct metal, it was fine. But if any `ol rotors are
drilled, then you COULD have serious problems. Drilling solid rotors
PROBABLY creates microscopic fissures that make weak spots. They also
wouldn't have the correct metallurgy, and COULD crack. If they're cast
that way, their shouldn't be any microscopic fissures and the "grain" of
the metal should be lined up to take most of the abuse. But I'm not a
metallugist, nor am I a cross-drilled rotor fan. Sure, they're great for
the track, but for normal Audi driving, (read- "spirited"), I'd go with
slotted rotors and a good set of metal brake pads and steel brake lines,
to boot. Slotted rotors cool quicker than normal solid, vented rotors.
And they're more structually sound than drilled rotors, making them more
feasible for use on the open road. That's just my opinion, anyway. Any
rebuttals, fellow Audians?
