Seat Squeak - 88 Audi 90.

Speaking of seats, is it widely agreed that the fix to the
squeaking/chirping seatbacks in the '88-'92 80/90 series cars (and maybe
others) is to open up the hog rings on the seatback and attack the cracked
weld with a torch, or is there an alternative? Originally someone mentioned
a worn plastic bushing that could be the source but I wanted to double
check.

The passenger seat squeak on my '88 90 is getting worse. If the passenger
seat is unoccupied, the seat chirps and squeaks about every 5-10 seconds
(every bump in the road essentially...). It's a very high frequency,
metal-on-metal sounding chirp that cannot be masked with excessively loud
music and is extremely irritating. My right arm is getting tired from
bracing the passenger seat while I drive, and the whole "shifting" thing
only makes it more difficult =). Any suggestions/insights appreciated.
Thanks.
