Tune-up & Maintenance
I am going to do a little tune-up/maintenance on the 4kq this weekend and
have a couple of newbie questions. The Bentley is on back-order, or I
could probably answer them myself:
1. Where are the timing marks and what is the best procedure for setting
the timing? I haven't even looked for them yet, so they are probably in
an obvious spot.
2. Where are the fluid check plugs for the front differential/Transaxle
and the rear differential located? I have an unusual whine which seems to
be coming from the front of the car, directly proportional to road speed.
Still haven't been able to determine if its front wheel bearings, gear
noise or just tire noise. Has anyone had Pirelli P600's on their car and
noticed alot of tire noise?
3. My rpm limiter cuts in promptly at 5800 rpm, is this normal for this
engine (stock 1985 4000 quattro)? Where is the rpm limiter on this
engine, in the ECU or is it part of the rotor (again, haven't even looked
yet)? This seems a little low to me, especially since the actual "red"
lines on the tach don't start until about 6300.
4. I dropped my center bearing down a couple of weeks ago while replacing
the entire rear brakes (doesn't sound that unusual for these cars) and now
under hard acceleration it seems to make noise, is there a procedure to
insure the bearing is centered correctly before tightening the bolts? I
set weight of the car on its wheels before tightening the bolts, like most
other drivetrain/suspension components require. Again, if the Bentley was
here, could probably answer this question myself.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the WOB on questions that I'm sure are old
hat for most of you. I did try the archives, but haven't been able to get
to them lately. Are they offline for some reason?
