Turbo conversion in coupe quattro started...
I mentioned a while back that I would be doing a MC in a 90 coupe
quattro, well we started today. We found a 87 5000 quattro that had a front
end wreck, not too much damage but enough to total I guess ($500!). We began
pulling the engine and marking all wires and vacuum lines this morning, and
we are ready to drop the motor. The front bumper and radiator support are
out so it's just a matter of rolling the motor out on a dolly. Next step
will be to get in and remove the harness. The game plan is to map out each
wire's destination from the ECU and match it correspondingly to the coupe.
There will be some complications, I'm sure, because the coupe is EFI and the
fuel lines come out in the middle of the fire wall. Here are some problem
areas I foresee, your suggestions are appreciated, especially BTDT?
-The AC, yes we want to keep it, but the alternator and compressor are on
opposite sides. The hope is that we will be able to swap brackets to the
original coupe location. That just sounds too easy though, it will be trial
and error. The coupe radiator comes way down blocking the alternator, and
the turbo is right there on the other side...
-Intercooler. Behind the grill seems like the only place, but space is tight
(serious customization) and it seems like the second radiator will come in
handy for the water cooled turbo (any thoughts?). The RS2 bumper is the
easy/expensive solution ($900?). If you have seen the ND turbo for the VW,
they put an intercooler underneath the hood behind the radiator. A compact
Corrado IC may fit with custom pipes there?
-Like I said earlier, the fuel lines are in the wrong place. We still need
to see if there are any differences with the accumulator and fuel pump and
appropriate changes there. Bending the lines may be the easiest way to get
them where we need them...
-Wiring. As far as I know, this should be pretty straight forward, just
identifying wires and making sure they go to the right places. We may try to
avoid rerunning wires and just splice existing wires into the coupe harness
that are redundant and already where they need to be.
-Climate control. Ersatz S2 web page said that they had trouble with this,
but I'm not sure how it ties into the ECU as of yet. The manual system will
be an easy choice is this step causes much trouble.
I plan on giving you guys updates as we get along, and I would love
your ideas, cautions, and suggestions. I know this is EFI to CIS, but you
CIS to CIS swap experiences will still be a great help... ;)
