A4 1.8t crunched head
q-list,
Well, the situation looks to be bad. Apparently the timing belt on
the A4 lost some teeth, allowing the crank to spin independently
from the camshafts. A leakdown test indicates that all four
cylinders have bent valves. Of course, my father is unhappy because
the repair manual specifies a 90K mile change interval, and the
belt broke at 64K (please, don't start a "timing belt mileage"
thread). So, now it looks like he will need to pull the head off of
the A4 to see what the damage is.
Does anyone know what valves are most likely to get crunched in the
1.8t engine? Any idea what the replacement cost is?
Note that this car was NOT chipped; the engine is completely stock.
The only time it was driven hard, also, was at a single track event
6 months ago. Most of the remaining miles are highway cruising.
More than likely this was a fluke, just a bad quality timing belt.
Still, I would recommend that 1.8t owners with chipped engines
replace their belt at 60K for extra preventative maintenance.
