Re: Looking for better crimp connectors
Hi All;
I'm new to Audis and just getting ready for a '99 A4 Quattro, but I can
answer that question. The "butt splices" are aircraft quality ones that are
available from any aviation supply. Look in your Yellow Pages for sources,
like "Aviall". Boeing Surplus in Seattle is certainly an option if you
happen to live in the area, but ANY aircraft supply has these in stock. Any
aircraft mechanic has loads of these lying around in his tool box - they are
that common. Or you can go to your local airport and check at the parts
counter of one of the better FBOs (Fixed Base Operators, or repair shops).
They will either sell you some or refer you to their supplier. The butt
splices and similar end terminals are very pricey compared to those from an
auto parts store, and they are definitely better, but as an aircraft
mechanic for 15 years I can say, they really aren't THAT much better. If you
are careful and use a good wire crimper the plain vanilla flavor connectors
work just as well as the chocolate sundae variety. I have seen comparable
quality (and waterproof) connectors at my local hardware store, so don't
forget to check there. The ones I am referring to are intended for wet
locations and include a built in sealant to exclude moisture.
