4KQ speedo

The speedometer cable in my 87 4Kcsq has been acting up lately. It was
making a lot of noise, off and on, under the dash, but now it is quiet.
Funny thing is, it is still shows my speed, but doesn't record any
mileage.	
	The person I bought the car from said he replaced the cable and, that
it sometimes backs out of the speedometer connection. I took the dash
apart and reconnected the cable, but it still doesn't record mileage.
	Anyone BTDT?
