a/c on 86 5k

should the ac compressor be kicking on and off while any button (not
econ or off) is depressed on the climate control for a 86 5ks(the later
system)? In the Bentley it says that the comressor should kick on no
matter the setting, as long as it is not ECON, but that just doesn't
feel right. Forgive me, this is my first audi & and I haven't been on
the list too long.
