Re: A/C flap door questions >>kinda long
Jason:
I had this spring break on my '89 200TQ last fall and didn't realize it. My
windshield was fogging up and I just automatically assumed it was the usual
Audi heater core problem. Even ordered a new one. WRONGO AMATEUR MECHANIC

You can get a replacement spring for that flap at Pep Boys and probably many
other parts places. The trick is getting one that's the right length and
diameter. If you have the old one to compare against it makes it a lot
easier. As I recall, the spring is about 2 inches long with tight coils and
is very stiff. Don't let the stiffness put you off--it'll work.
It attaches to the middle of the flap via that round, black piece of keyed
plastic. If you turn it, you can remove it from the flap. The side with
the eyelet goes toward the firewall. One end of the spring goes to the
round black piece on the flap; the other goes at kind of an odd angle. If
you were looking at the flap from the driver's side of the car--like on the
floor-and could see thru the console- the spring goes up at about a
340-degree angle from the flap to the vacuum solenoid. Hope that's not too
confusing. The other end of the spring hooks over the center of a metal
crosspiece that is just below the solenoid. Hook up that side first. You
may have to bend the ends of the spring with a pair of needle nose to make
them fit.
Once you've got that hooked up, hook the other end to the black plastic
piece with the eyelet. Pull it down (it'll take some force)push the flap
shut slightly ( it'll only be slightly 'cause your hand will be in the way)
and twist the plastic piece into the flap. Push the flap closed and twist
it the rest of the way home with your needle nose.
Sorry this was so long, all.
HTH,
