Have you considered patching just the hole.  Many epoxys are impervious to gas
and would offer a cheap permanant solution.

P.O. story of my own almost as bad as your.  P.O. spliced the radio by cutting
into the main ignition wire at steering column.  No crimp no solder (no lets
not start that thread again) just cut in and wrapped with electrical tape.
Well the the ignition wire finally parted one day and I spent the better part
of a weekend tracking down the problem.  You can just imagine the words that
were coming out of the open door.  What an A**hole.
