I just got an issue of Car Craft today (May 1999), and here is their 
explanation of an open diff:

"...which always sends power to the tire with the least traction"

After reading the Torsen white paper, I now see how this explanation is 
wrong, and this was the source of my confusion, as sources of this type 
were my primary source (along with a lot of first-hand knowledge of 
practical applications) of information about diffs.
