Virginia City stuff...cool info
Wolff decided to speak these words:
>Not sure of the final count at the Virginia City Hillclimb last weekend,
>but I saw the black rolled late model Porsche. Apparently another
>Porsche suffered a similar fate as well as a mustang and the F-40 caught
>on fire.
It was a VERY modified 993 TT that got trashed the first run up the hill
on Sat. total loss...flipped i think 5-6 times...bent EVERY single Fikse
wheel on the car...
Then there wsa the mustang, landed on its hood and is probably fixable i
would guess.
Then on sunday, there was a caterham that went straight into the side of
the mountain...mostly lost
Then there was the big one, Steve Beddor crashed his CTR2 sport...his is
the one that was goign to be entered in Pikes Peak...mostly a total
loss... :o( I had to salute it as the tow truck brought it down on the
flat bed...
Then there was the F40 which blew the turbos and created a spectacular F1
style explosion with fire, smoke and everything. The guy backed all the
way down the course...the car didnt even look like it was hurt...but it
was ...
Then there were the rides i got. I rode in an NSX. It wasnt impressive
at all...not all that fast, didnt handle all that well. We got up to the
top and started to head down when i asked the guy if i could drive, and
he said ok... So i drove it down about 5 miles of windy roads to the
start of the climb. I was NOT impressed. The passat has more
personality. THe steering was numb, the power assist was not linear at
all, the brakes were ok, and the shifter was definitely nice. But if
felt like a suped up accord... A big disappointment..
then i got down to the bottom and started talking to this guy with a
beautiful Ferrari 355. I talked to him for a bit and asked him for a
ride. He said sure and i hopped in. WOW!!!! That car is spectacular.
Everything is just so right. The sound of the engine had my pulse racing
right off of idle. As we went by the walls, the sound reflected souned
like an F1. The handling was superior to anything else i had ever been
in. It stuck as though the reserve of grip was limitless and the balance
was finer than that of a swiss made watch. The turn in was faster than
the mind could react and the braking would squash a fly against the
windshield... To say that i fell in love with the car in 1 instant would
be an understatement. When we got up to the top, i couldnt stop talking
about the sound and everything else. Then something completely
unexpected happened. He said: "would you like to drive it down?" I
belive my reaction was: "YES, OH MY GOD, YES!!!" I think it was my
quickest reaction time to anything. I got in and felt the controls. The
clutch was amazingly smooth and i had no trouble taking off. The only
difficulty was learning to modulate the throttle. Teh throttle pedal
felt like it had a huge amount of inertia to get it to crack open the
throttle, so tip in when trying to drive smoothly presented a challenge.
Once opened up, it was phenominal. The speed limit on the road was only
35, but i probably had the biggest smile on my face ever for going 35. I
had it in 2nd at about 4000rpm and it sounded breathtaking. I did open
it up a couple times and my mouth dropped open as i listened to the
symphony of engine right behind my shoulder. the acceleration was mind
bending. I must have gone from 35-70 in a matter of a second or
two...and it was SOOOO smooth...all hte way to 8500 rpm...wow... I am
spoiled and i told the owner so. I told him that he ruined my life
savings for the next 30 years as i try to save up for a 355....
I also rode in the 348 as well, that one was almost as bad as the NSX.
The 355 is definitely one of the best cars ever made...
later...
