Here are the numbers:

215/55R15: Diameter 59.7 cm
225/50R15: Diameter 60.7 cm
So, the 225/50 are 1 cm bigger than the 215/55. 

The number are out of a chart publicated in the swedish car magazine
"Bilsport", nr. 8/1998.
