087 Transmission

I was underneath the car today and I noticed something I hadn't seen
before.  I saw a wiring clip coming out of of my trany, it lead up to the
engine compartment where it stopped leaving an exposed wiring clip
zip-tied to a bracket next to the ATF dipstick.  My question is, what is
that?  Test port?  Something that should be hooked-up?
Also noticied a TON of oily crud all over the bell housing and surrounding
areas, is that normal?
On a funnier note, (WOB), I came out from underneath my car to get a soda
and I noticed something neon green on the wiper blade.  Though the hood
was up so I couldn't tell what it was, it was a beautiful tropical bird!
Strange, this is New York, it surely ain't no tropical island, but the
temp. could fool you today(98F!), yuck.
