S4 Transmission Trouble

Hello all,

I'm beginning to think I'm cursed!

I've now got two Audis with transmission problems! The '90 80's problem
is merely annoying, but the '94 S4 is not at the present time shifting.
On a 
five minute errand yesterday I found that I couldn't get the car into
second.
This resulted in a nasty GRIND as I released the clutch. Fiddled with it
and 
got into second, and then on to third.

Two miles later I'm home, but 1st and 2nd seem to have their own new
locations
in the H pattern and are VERY hard to shift into.

What do you think? Sounds like linkage (I hope!) to me. Is there
anything I 
can do to verify that it's drivable enough to get to a garage, or should
I have it towed?
