Need advice: slack in trans on 88 80q

My brother and I are rebuilding the transmission in his 88 80q. We have it
out, but not apart yet.

When he accellerates from a coasting, or when first shifting into any
gear, there is about 1/2 second where the engine spins up, but the car
hasn't started to accellerate yet. Then there's a jolt, and it accelerates
normally until the next time he lets off the gas.

It's the same in any gear. Has anyone else seen this? Is there something
obvious we should be looking for? From looking at the diagrams, my best
guess is a worn out Torsen. The car has 150k miles. We're replacing the
synchros, so it's possible that it's been driven hard in it's past (he's
only had it for a year).

Any help would be appreciated!
