Just got through reading the whole sublist thread, and find this one to be
the best summary, Ian. During my tenure on this list, I have seen sublists
come and go (remember audicar.com?), some that exist, with little interest,
and others that concentrate on specific technical issues almost exclusively,
the S car list comes to mind (and if it's a btdt thread, it's butted to
archive search immediately).

The issue here is one thinking out loud, when they should have just done.
Supply and demand rule list survival, not the fact a list exists. If there
are enough 44 chassis "issues" (and one could certainly argue that to be an
audi ascribed fact), the list will thrive. If not, the list will fail. It's
that simple, welcome to the internet. Those resisting change, will try to
grab the virtual wheel and steer towards their comfort zone of no change.
Remember this list is a dynamic, so is the subject and content. Anyone can
lean in our list tabogon, but there really isn't a wheel per say.

That said, we could look at what is proposed by our covetted listmeister. I
for one have been on this list for many years (more than I care to count),
seen all the subject matter possible on audis. We used to be on a 2 year
subject cycle, now we are lucky to make it 6months. What does this mean in
terms of Dan's proposals and objectives?

I argue that Dan has put himself here by his own actions, or ours as posters.
Bottom Line is that Dan can't handle this list, really couldn't for a while.
Not knocking him for it, 200 messages a day are still not uncommon. I
really don't care what search engine you acquire, that's a voluminous task
for any of them. This list doesn't recognize any search engine or post
protocol to make that task any less daunting for Dan or any engine. We could
argue where that "blame" may lie, but again, this is a dynamic and
unmoderated list, so really there is no blame. What does get buried by this
dynamic, is specific FAQ and posts for specific cars. Coming full circle, we
see the frustration from cremudgeons and newbies alike, newbies can't find
the info, cremudgeons have seen it a hundred times. Carpe diem rules without
good historical reference and guidance.

The S car list appeared quietly without fanfare, and has thrived well, so has
the 20v list. My own thinking is that those with any specific chassis that
WANT to take on a sublist, are welcome to, and should be encouraged to do so.
In the long run, it helps Dan AND those complaining of the 200 posts in
their mailboxes. Could you miss something good? You betcha, the only way to
catch it all, is to subscribe to it all. But certainly right now, most
aren't even catching it all right here. Who really reads those 200 posts
anyway. So chances are really good you already have btdt in the "good"
department.

I encourage that someone take a stab at the 44 list. Survival of the fittest
rules the Darwin i-net in which we type our prose. Supply and demand will
determine the outcome, not a bunch of naysayers grabbing the "idea" wheel.
Without question, the qlist has survived moves, sublists and kicks more than
any other list regarding audis. It is the fittest statistically, a couple of
tentacles helping to root this beast will hardly threaten it's demise. Quite
the contrary....
