93 Audi 100S Auto Trans Prob

Talking to my brother today he said that the tranny in his '93 100S is acting 
very strangly.  Last night the car would not shift out of 2nd gear and it 
would not "freewheel" going down hill.  It was very warm here yesterday and 
the car will smoke (Tranny Smoke) from time to time when it is very warm.  
The car has 72K miles on it and the tranny has acted weird every once in 
awhile over the last year.  Anyone been down this road before?  Is this just 
another Audi Auto tranny that blows up?.
