Fault codes & dash panel

Hi all,

I wanted to get rid of the 'BREMSLICHT' (=test brake lights in German)
alert on startup and change it for the English or international version.
There's a switch on the back of the instrument panel that has six
positions- three marked 'Benzin' (petrol) and three marked 'Diesel'. The
positions themselves are marked with 'DE' 'US' 'RW', which I take to stand
for Germany, United States and rest of world.

My question: why would changing the setting generate a '4444' (all is OK)
fault code? This code disappears when you leave the car overnight, BTW.

Please CC: me on you replies, as my time for reading the q-list has been
limited lately.

Thanks in advance,

Tom
