Well yes and no.  If you go ahead and replace the boot before the joint 
starts clicking, then the CV joint can be saved.  (be sure to clean out all 
the old grease if you do decide to rebuild it before you put the new grease 
in.)  If it is already clicking, then just replace the shaft.  I would just 
replace the shaft anyway (They can be had for less than $100 each).

Of course I drove my 86 Coupe GT for a year with a clicking CV joint, but I 
would not recommend this to others, there is a safety issue here.
