Telling which 80q tranny is which?

Hopefully someone out there can help us.

We've removed the transmission from an '88 80q so we can replace the
synchros (and the torsen).

We can't seem to order new synchros b/c the dealers ask us "which
transmission" we have. The Bentley manual says that quattros all have the
same transmission, called "01A". The dealer says that's not the right
number. We can't find any numbers on this thing that will make them happy.

They say there's supposed to be a plate riveted onto the bottom with the
number. There is no such plate, nor is there any evidence of there having
been anything riveted there in the past. There is a paper sticker that is
completely faded, and doesn't seem to say anything.

How else can you tell what transmission you have? We have it apart, can you
tell by looking at any of the parts inside? Can you tell by looking at the
actual synchros? Can you tell by the VIN#? Does it really matter for
synchros - are they actually different?
