Im going out on a limb here... Id guess that the "nasty black stuff" in
the lifters is way way way better than cranking a motor with no oil in
it.

A) If it cleans out the lifters, it isnt doing your bearings any good.
B) If you have nasty black stuff in your lifters at all, you arent
changing your oil often enough or using the wrong oil
