Thanks for the help.

I flushed out the cooling system and got rid of some sludge and 
refilled with coolant - found pure water in the system. Also put some 
injector cleaner in the fuel tank as someone suggested. 
Anyway the oil temp still climbs to 118 deg C which thanks to the 
reassuring advice from the list seems normal.
The other thing is that when I switch the fan or head lights on the 
temp rises immediately by 6 - 10 degs. - So the gauge is probably not 
that accurate in the first place.
