making "good" connections will go along way to preserving connector
life.  Keep them clean, add dielectric grease, and there will be a very
low resistance connection.  If the connector is dirty, corroded, loose,
etc (poor qual. crimp ons, etc) the reistance will generate unnecessary
heat, which makes the connection worse, melts the plastic, etc., and a
vicious cycle is started.

If you can find a good condition pigtail, soldering and heatshrinking it
on should fix the problem, along with treating the connection as I say
above.

funny that the guy hosting the "aufifans" group shuld have an "Audi fan"
problem...
