RE: CIS-E problem VW related

I had a similar problem with my 90 VW Passat 16v. Same symptoms but it
would happen to me when the car was running, and then it would slowly loose
power and die. I notieced that my distributor was leaking oil and it was
bathing the hall sensor with hot oil. I think this made the hall sensor go
bad and caused the erratic engine\tachometer performance. I replaced the
distributor, which came with a hall sensor, and it fixed the problem.

I know that having a bad hall sensor was causing the engine problems, but I
am not sure why it made the tach jump around. I know it is an electronic
tach but I thought it took its signal from a sensor on the transmission.
