wierd gas guage behavior

hey all, i have a wierd situation with my gas guage.  The other day, it 
was working just perfectly, every single time.  Then one day, i drove 
home, it was working, i turned off the car, and an hour later when i 
turned it back on, it didnt work.  Today, it worked, but showed about 1/4 
tank less gas than was actually in it.  And now it doesnt work anymore.

I tried messing with the connections at the back of the guage pod and at 
the tank, but nothing worked.  Anyone have any ideas???
