'88 5KS water pump
My son's 1988 5KS has just experienced symptoms similar to those
reported by Dave Head. We pulled the water pump last night, expecting to find
a bad bearing, but in keeping with Audi tradition, it threw us a curve. The
water pump was fine, the bearing is very similar in "feel" to the new one we
have ready to install.
But, the face of the block, where the water pump sits, is pitted. One
spot is very deep and it appears that this is the source of the leak. The
water pump was sitting in such a way that the rubber gasket was on the
"borderline" of this large pitted spot and the water was going under the
rubber and down the front of the engine.
I'm planning to use some epoxy on the block and hope that will
resolve the problem. Otherwise we'll have to pull the engine, then weld and
grind flat.
Just add this to your list of "stuff" that is known about the I-5
engines....
Later.
