BTDT, Sounds exactly like a failing distributor.  Pull the coil wire when 
it won't start, no spark, most likely bad dist (specifiacally the hall 
effect sensor, or the wiring to it, has failed)  Check for power at the 
coil, if there is power, measure coil resistances, it they are OK (They 
will be way off, or OK, not just a little off).  Lastly mark the dist rotor 
location, and pull the sucker out.  Spin the shaft by hand while having the 
dist grounded, and with the key switch on, sparks should fly.  After all 
this if you still have no spark, I would replace the distributor.
