V8 is dead

It finally happened.  The old reliable will not start.  Battery seems ok as
lights and other electrical services work.  Tried boosting, no response.
As I'm not mechanically inclined (this is a bad thing for an Audi owner
right?) and before I have it towed to the shop I thought I would ask the
pundits for any hints or BTDT on what may be wrong.  Will I need to pull
the kids from summer camp and use the refunds on the car?
